Designing Spatial Systems Vol.1

Over the course of the early stages of the project, it’s always been a bit of a challenge to develop something loose and malleable in order to adapt and be able to be changed and added to as artists come and go, when, as a designer, you’re so used to coming up with quite complete design solutions. In the following sketches, I’ve tried to come up with a few different methods of construction systems that can be adapted to create things like mini display boxes, large sculpture displays, workspaces, public amenities, and artist studios. Through these simple systems, I hope that, as discussed in my writings on time depth artists, can leave their own lasting mark on space. In what way? I’m not sure, but that’s the beauty of it.

It’s still a long way to go before some physical design testing is done in the near future; I’ll be sure to document it.

Rod systems with Timber clamp elements to screw or nail plywood boards, perhaps?
Repeating a simple detail multiple ways to create space?
Simple boxes, the front acting as a canvas, representing the artists and folding out to create open air studio and exhibition spaces when required.
