The Journey
Young Man began after Marcus Khoudair, Screen Writer, and Ethan Scotney, Illustrator and Masters of Architecture student, met each other in December 2023. They developed a new visual language integrating their shared passion for music and storytelling. Incorporating ideas of space and sound from Ethan’s architectural education, and rhythm derived from Marcus’ writing experience and passion for music.
The script was written with life experiences from Marcus and Ethan that were woven into the script through discussions over coffee across multiple weeks. The method of illustration was quite experimental, stemming from the numerous related actions present in the script. First experimental sketches were rough, mashing everything together in interconnected blobs and shapes in a linear fashion. However, it proved too busy for the viewer and hard to decipher. Later iterations of the visual language sought to find order in the chaos, finding methods of representing sounds, emotions, thoughts and additionally space, throughout the page. This proved to be after much discussion a visually interesting and orderly visual language.
Once language is sorted, the process of translating script into this new visual language begins. First, using a simple clutch pencil and compass to map out the bubbles and sketch scenes and when done. Using tools such as fountain pens, felt tip pens, and ink brushes on 200gsm A3 paper and developed over 2024. The task was a relaxing and reflective retreat from Ethan’s work and architectural studies.
It then became time to search for a venue to display the work and a place to print it into a book form for people to purchase.
In late 2024, the illustration process was complete, and 34 A3 pages were scanned to create the continuous installation you see here today.
